What's Actually Included in a Website Design Package?

What a website design package should cover, what's usually charged extra, and the six line items missing from most quotes. A checklist for Australian businesses.

The short version

  • Design, build, mobile, basic SEO setup, a handover and a fixed timeline should all be in the package. If they're not listed, they're probably extras.
  • The six things most often left out: content, photos, redirects, training, hosting setup and post-launch support.
  • Two quotes thousands apart are usually quoting different scopes, not different quality.
  • Ask what happens the week after launch. The answer separates a package from a handball.

Two quotes land in your inbox. One says $2,800. The other says $9,500. Both say “website design package” at the top.

They’re almost never quoting the same job. Here’s what should be in a package, what usually isn’t, and the questions that tell you which you’re looking at.

What should be included in a website design package?

A proper website design package covers the design itself, the build, mobile layouts, basic SEO setup, a site you can edit without ringing anyone, a documented handover and a fixed timeline. Written content and photography are usually quoted separately. If something isn’t written down in the quote, assume it’s an extra and ask.

The standard inclusions

These should be in any quote worth considering.

Line item What it actually means
Design Layouts made for your business, not a theme with your logo dropped in
Build The site constructed, tested and launched
Mobile Designed for phones first, tested on real devices, not just shrunk
Basic SEO setup Page titles, descriptions, heading structure, sitemap, Search Console connected
Speed Built to pass Google’s page experience checks at launch
Editable by you You can change text and images yourself without a developer
Handover Documentation and a walkthrough, plus your own logins
Fixed price and timeline A number and a date, not an hourly estimate that drifts

If a quote doesn’t name these, it isn’t necessarily a bad quote. But you need to ask, because the gap between two prices usually lives here.

The six things usually left out

This is where the surprises come from.

1. Written content. Most packages assume you’re supplying the words. Writing website copy that actually persuades is a skill and it takes time. If you’re writing it yourself, fine, but block out the hours honestly. Unwritten content is the number one reason website projects stall.

2. Photography. Stock images are often included. Photos of your real team, premises or work almost never are. If your site needs them, book the shoot early rather than discovering the gap a week before launch.

3. Redirects from your old site. If you already have a website, every old address needs to point at its new home or you lose the search rankings you’ve built. It’s a real piece of work and it’s frequently missing from cheaper quotes. We’ve covered why in what a website redesign costs.

4. Training. Being handed logins isn’t training. Twenty minutes of someone showing you how to update your own site is the difference between a website you control and one you’re locked out of.

5. Hosting setup and the domain. Usually a small cost, but it should be named. You should also own your domain in your own account. Always.

6. What happens after launch. Most packages end the day the site goes live. Then a plugin breaks, or you need a page changed, and you find out there’s no arrangement. Ask before you sign.

What’s genuinely an extra, and that’s fair

Not everything left out is a trick. These are reasonably quoted separately because they vary so much:

  • Ecommerce. A store is a different build. Ours start at $3,999 + GST.
  • Bookings, memberships, integrations. Each one is real build time.
  • Ongoing SEO. Setup is part of a build. Competing month after month is a service, not a line item.
  • Ongoing maintenance. Hosting, updates, security and edits, usually a monthly plan. Ours start at $299.

An honest quote separates these clearly so you can see what’s build and what’s ongoing. A vague quote bundles everything into one number and leaves you unable to compare.

Six questions that reveal the real scope

Ask these of every quote and the differences appear immediately.

  1. Who writes the words, and is that in this price?
  2. What happens to my existing pages and their Google rankings?
  3. Can I edit the site myself afterwards, and will you show me how?
  4. What’s the fixed price and the actual launch date?
  5. Who owns the domain, the hosting and the logins when we’re done?
  6. What happens the week after launch if something breaks?

Question six is the one that separates a package from a handball. For more on comparing numbers side by side, see how to read a web design quote.

What we include, plainly

So you’ve got something concrete to measure against, our builds start at $2,499 + GST for up to 10 pages. That covers design, build, mobile, basic SEO setup, a site you can edit yourself, a documented handover, redirects if you’re replacing an existing site, and a fixed price agreed before we start.

Content writing and photography are quoted separately, because they vary enormously and we’d rather price them honestly than pad the build. Ongoing care is a separate monthly plan from $299, with no lock-in.

Full pricing across every type of build is in what a website costs in Australia.

If you’ve got two quotes in front of you and can’t work out why they’re thousands apart, send them over. We’ll tell you what each one is actually offering, even if the answer is that the other quote is the better deal.

Frequently asked questions

What should be included in a website design package?

A proper package covers design, the build itself, mobile layouts, basic SEO setup, a site you can edit yourself, a documented handover and a fixed timeline. Anything beyond that, particularly written content and photography, is usually quoted separately and should be listed either way.

Is content writing included in website design?

Usually not, and it's the single most common surprise. Most packages assume you'll supply the words. Writing good website copy takes real time, so if a quote includes it, that's a genuine part of its value. If it doesn't, budget for writing it yourself or paying someone.

Are photos included in a website design package?

Stock photos often are. Photography of your actual business almost never is. If your site needs real images of your team, premises or work, treat that as a separate cost and book it early, because it's a common reason launches slip.

What does a website design package cost in Australia?

Most small business packages run between $2,500 and $6,000. Ours start at $2,499 + GST for up to 10 pages and $5,999 for a semi-custom design. Online stores start at $3,999. What moves the number most is page count and whether content is written for you.

Is hosting included in a website design package?

Rarely in the build price, though setup usually is. Hosting is an ongoing cost, typically bundled into a care plan afterwards. Ours start at $299 a month and cover hosting, security, updates, backups and edits together rather than billing them separately.
